Abraham Alhadef: "In 1742 Abraham who immigrated to Palestine from Rhodes, was asked to become an official, but at first he refused. Only after three years did he accept the position (p. 123)." "In 1745 the Istanbul Officials asked the sages of Jerusalem to appoint assistants for Benveniste to take care of legacies and other matters, and for this purpose hey invited Alhadef to join the officials and be responsible for the legacies, together with six other Torah scholars (p 124)." "The phenomenon of embezzlement was prevalent at that time. Several of the Jerusalem officials continued with their own private business dealings, and often they use the community funds as well. When they lost money the creditors or their heirs seized the money from the community cash-box. Abraham Alhadef "mixed his money with the community money," that is, he took from the community cash-box. After his death it was discovered that there was a large deficit in the cash-box, and an attempt as made to s, b. bef. 1735
