I thank CRARG (www.crarg.org) for helping me to discover many missing branches of my family tree.

Our Englander family tree spans nine generations, extending back to the 1720s.

Our earliest documents are an 1809 death record, for my Englender great great great grandfather, and an 1814 marriage record, for Sora Angielczyk, age 20, the daughter of Lewek Engielander/Angielczyk and Ruchla Jachimowicz. Sora Angielczyk was living in the town of Wancerzów (near Czestochowa and Mstów) and she married 24-year-old Cudek Fayner, in the town of Mstów. Click here to see the various ways that Lewek Engielander/Angielczyk signed documents from about 1809 to 1830.

In the early 1800s, our Englender family (then known as Engielander or, more often, Angielczyk) lived on the property of the nobleman Graff Szenaych:

Josek Hersz Englender (son of Lewek Engielander/Angielczyk and Ruchla Jachimowicz) is my great great grandfather. Josek Hersz was born in about 1809, most likely in the small town of Wancerzów, Poland (very near the larger towns of Mstów and Czestochowa). He was married twice, and with each wife had many children. Several people on our tree have been named for Josek Hersz (Joseph Harry) or for one of his two wives, Sura Fajgla (Sarah Fannie) or Hendla (Anna).

Our Englander family lived in southern Poland, just east of a town called Czestochowa. They lived first in Janów; then in Przyrów, Mstów, and Zarki; then in Czestochowa; and finally a few went on to Bedzin and Radomsko. Click on this map of part of Poland to see the location of most of our cities where our families lived in Poland.

An important mystery in our family focuses on the town of Janów, in the year 1863: A birth certificate for a member of our family mentions that all of the records for 1863 and earlier were destroyed in a fire. 1863 is also about the year when part of our Englander family left Janów and moved to the nearby towns of Przyrow and Mstów (and, later, Zarki and Czestochowa). So, what happened in 1863 to cause these events?? This small chapter of history from the town of Janów explains what happened in that year:

On 6 July 1863, during an insurrection against Russia, a squad (about 200 people) of Colonel Zygmunt Chmielinski attacked and destroyed the Russian forces which were stationed in Janów, and they intercepted a transport of the tsar's gold. Three days later, Colonel Ernroth (commandant of Czestochowa) came to Janów with his squad, and burned down the entire village! Some of citizens of Janów were killed and their bodies were thrown into a well located in the center of the city. Ernroth then attacked Chmielinski's forces (near the village of Smiertny Dab), but Chmielisnki was able to withdraw without losses.

My great grandmother was Frances (Englander) Talman. (Click here to see her photograph.) Her brother, Solomon Englander, was (as far as we know) the first of our Englanders to leave Poland. He left in about 1887, and settled in Chicago. Frances came later, in 1902. She arrived in New York City on the 13 Feb 1904, on the SS Pennsylvania. Frances and Solomon's sister, Ruchel (Englander) Broda, was the oldest of the siblings and (in 1874) was the first to get married. (Ruchel's son Joseph Broda went to Paris in 1913; her son Salomon went to Paris earlier than that.) Szmul Englander was the brother of Frances, Solomon, and Ruchel. At least two of Szmul's kids went to the USA: Louis Englander (arrived 1908) and Rose (Englander) Ovetsky (arrived 1910).

My branch of our family tree begins with Josek Hersz Englander and his first wife, Hendla (Kifer) Englander. Josek Hersz Englander and Hendla (Kifer) Englander had six children, two of whom died in 1866. The 1866 death certificates for seventeen-year-old Szulim Englander and five-year-old Natan/Nuszen Englander are very informative, because they list the entire surviving family as of that year, along with their ages. It is also interesting to see the index for these announcements, just to see the name in print.

Josek Hersz's daughter Frances (Englander) Talman was my great grandmother. In about 1888, she traveled north, and married Emanuel Talman, a twenty-two-year-old boot maker from the little town of Plawno, Poland. Together, they had seven children. The first four, born in Radomsko (a town near Plawno) included my grandfather, Harry Talman. Harry, as a twenty-three-year-old barber in Chicago, married my grandmother Bertha Oberman on 7 Sept 1913. Bertha came from the town of Zaslaw, in present-day Ukraine. She arrived in Philadelphia in 1909. Here is a photo of Harry and Bertha Talman, and baby Lee around 1914. And, from 1970, here is Lee Talman with his own baby, Neal. Frances and Emanuel Talman had three children after they arrived in Chicago.

Josek Hersz's other children (in addition to Frances) were Solomon (a tailor), Szulim (a baker), and Ruchel (who married a tailor named Mordka Broda). As far as I know, the Brodas are the only family on our family tree that went to France, and did not continue on to the New World. Ruchel (Englander) Broda and Mordka Broda were married on 18 Nov 1874, in the town of Przyrów, Poland (pronounced "PSHI-roof"). Their first child was Lewek Broda, born in Zarki ("ZHAR-kee") on 30 Sept 1875. He died in Czestochowa in 1942. Mordka and Ruchel also had twin boys, named Chil Nusyn Broda and Josek Hersz Broda, born in Przyrów on 31 Jan 1892. Click here to see a copy of their birth certificate. (Zarki was the ancestral home of the Broda family. The Brodas lived there since at least 1832, when Mordka Broda's father, Lewek Broda, was born.) Josek Hersz Broda left Poland for France in 1913, with his wife (Fanny) and son (Marcus). In France, he used the name Joseph Broda. From his 1924 French naturalization papers, I learned that Joseph joined the French Foreign Legion in 1914. And I learned that he had "three brothers and one sister abroad, plus one brother (Salomon [Broder]), age 44, in Paris." These two brothers, Joseph Broda and Salomon Broder, both lived in Paris and had children. Here are photos of three (out of six) of Joseph's children: Marcus Broda; Leon Broder; Albert Broda.

The other half of our Englander family tree is actually the "first" half. It begins with Josek Hersz Englander and his first wife, Sura Fajgla. Together, Josek Hersz and Sura Fajgla had at least and perhaps four or more children. The first child was Fiszel Englander, born about 1832. Fiszel's nine children included Ida (Englander) Chapnick. (Here is Ida's birth certificate and the death certificate for her mother, whose name was Balbina (Diament) Englander.) Likely, the last child of Josek and Sura Fajgla was Tauba Ruda Englander, born about 1841. Tauba Ruda married Dawid Zylberberg on 6 January 1864, in the nearby town of Plawno. We know nothing more about this family.

Another of Fiszel's children was Dina Englender. She married a man named Stroz in Czestochowa and then, in the 1930s, moved with her family to Amsterdam. She had one child, a daughter, named Laja Stroz. Dina was taken by the Nazis to Poland, where she was killed at the Sobibor death camp. Laja was taken to Westerbork, then to Theresienstadt, and then finally to Auschwitz. Officially, by the Dutch government, she is missing, but assumed to have died sometime in 1944.

What does our name "Englander" mean? Nothing, as far as I can tell. Jews first began having surnames around 1825 or earlier. In many cases, they were simply assigned surnames.

If you find a random person named Englander or Englender, is the person likely to be a cousin of ours? Probaby no, because Englander was a very common name among Jews and non-Jews in Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. If, on the other hand, you find someone named Englander or Englender who is Jewish and from the area near Czestochowa, Poland, then there is a very good chance they are related to us!

Below, you will find an overview of our family tree. Note that the spelling "Englender" vs. "Englander" is of no significance. In Poland, our family spoke Yiddish and Hebrew, but most did not read or write. The registration office recorded the documents in Polish. But in the late 1800s, when Poland was governed by Russia, the documents were recorded in Russian (by Poles who spoke almost no Russian!). Therefore, there was a huge amount of room for misspellings and mistakes!

I have collected all of this information from a variety of sources, including birth, marriage, and death records (from Poland, the USA, and France); passenger manifests (for the trip from Poland); naturalization records (USA and France); census records (USA: 1900, 1910, and 1920); city directory records (1890-1935); and other documents. I have been pleased and surprised to discover that the vital registration offices of Poland have the birth, marriage, and death records for nearly every city in Poland, going back to about 1808. I visitedPoland in 1999 to perform several concerts and to search for our family's records in several Polisharchives. Click here to see what the original record books look like, in a photo I took in the town of Czestochowa, Poland.

Let me know if you'd like a paper copy of the entire family tree, or copies of any family records. I hope you enjoy our family web site!
